Relevant Health Information Check Box Overview

The Relevant Health Information Check Box is used to flag secure messages that meet the following criteria:

  • The secure message is being sent by a provider or practice or facility staff member
  • The secure message is being sent to a patient or a patient's authorized representative (proxy)
  • The secure message contains relevant health information specific to the patient
    • The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) indicates the provider is the best judge of what health information should be considered relevant in this context
    • Messages with content exclusively relating to billing questions, appointment scheduling, or other administrative subjects do not qualify as relevant health information according to CMS

The check box should be checked for messages that meet the above criteria. The default is "checked".These messages count toward Promoting Interoperability (previously known as meaningful use) Stage 3 Secure Messaging reporting (provided all other CMS required conditions are met).

Using the Relevant Health Information Check Box

When this feature is enabled, you see a check box below the secure message editor window in messages that meet the following criteria:

  • You are creating, replying to, or forwarding a secure message
  • A patient or patient's proxy is included as a message recipient in the To field (care team members can also be included)

By default the check box is checked, indicating the secure message contains relevant health information for the patient.Complete the following steps before sending the message:

  1. Determine if the message content qualifies as relevant health information per CMS guidelines
  2. If you determine the message content qualifies as relevant health information, leave the check box selected.
  3. If you determine the message content does not qualify as relevant health information, deselect the check box before sending the secure message.

Note: Messages with the box checked count toward Promoting Interoperability (previously known as meaningful use) Stage 3 Secure Messaging reporting (provided all other CMS required conditions are met).
