The Community View tab in the patient summary displays an aggregate view of patient data from Cerner Health Information Exchange (HIE) and contracted external data sources. Community view is available only after you perform a global patient search. The view includes source systems connected to your Cerner HIE and the information that is available for the specific patient. Information can include Consolidated Clinical Document Architecture (C-CDA) documents, parsed C-CDA document data, results, and other clinical documentation.

Prerequisites
Community view has the following prerequisites:
- Your site must have Cerner HIE with Community View. Community View was previously known as Outside Record Viewer (ORV).
- Your Provider Portal must be connected to Cerner HIE. This requires an interoperability project.
- You must have the appropriate authorizations in Provider Portal. This includes authorizations that grant access to global search, patient summary, and community view.
Overview
Community view is available from the patient summary after a global search. The patient summary Community View tab displays an aggregate summary of the patient's health care information in Cerner HIE. The health care information is obtained from multiple participating health care providers. The aggregate summary is intended to support optimal patient care. It is not intended to replace the patient's medical record or guaranteed to encompass all historical information on the patient. Information is available based on patient consent and provided to you in compliance with patient privacy requirements.
Access Community View from Global Search
Complete the following steps to access community view from a global search:
- Perform a global search for a patient. See Global Search for more information.
- Select the patient name or Actions > Patient Summary to open the patient summary.
- If Community View is not the active tab in the patient summary, you can select Community View. When the Community View tab is selected (or is the default tab), the system automatically makes a request to Cerner HIE for a community view of the patient. If the patient is found, the aggregate summary of the patient's health care information in Cerner HIE is automatically displayed. See Cerner HIE Patient Automatic-Create Functionality for more information.
Note: If you perform a global search and do not see the Community View tab in the patient summary, review the community view prerequisites.
Access Community View from Patient Archive Search
Complete the following steps to access community view from a patient archive search:
- Perform a patient archive search. See Patient Archive Search for more information.
- Select the patient name or Actions > Patient Summary to open the patient summary.
- Select Global Search Mode. The Search Reasons dialog box opens. Read the message and select a reason for your global search.
- Select OK. If further explanation is required, enter it in the box and select OK.
Cerner HIE Patient Automatic-Create Functionality
Community view uses Cerner HIE patient automatic-create functionality by default. When you perform a global search for a patient and access the Community View tab in patient summary, the system makes a request to Cerner HIE with the patient's information. If a medical record number (MRN) and trusted assigning authority object identifier match is not found in Cerner HIE, Cerner HIE creates a new patient record. After the record is created, Cerner HIE attempts to match patient demographics from the request to a person in the master patient index (MPI). This functionality enables community view access to all results from Cerner HIE and external partners.
Note: In certain cases, Cerner HIE will not create a new patient record. In these cases, the following message is displayed in the Community View tab: Patient does not exist in MPI.
Community View Display
The information displayed in the Community View tab is an aggregate summary of the patient's health care information in Cerner HIE. Cerner HIE is configurable, which means the information displayed will vary based on your site. The following information is provided as a general guide to what you may see in the community view. What you actually see may differ.
- Patient Demographics
